Rothorn - High up in the clouds

Rothorn - High up in the clouds

This photo story will take you on a ride along with Jannis and his Madonna. Breath-taking trails, a dramatic sunset and Swiss mountains are all guaranteed.

Sometimes it’s best to just start an adventure without having a perfect plan. We were lucky enough to spend some time in the Eastern part of Switzerland and decided to explore more of what Lenzerheide has to offer, beyond the bike park and the usual trails.

By the end of the afternoon we had packed all we needed and managed to jump on the last gondola up to the Rothorn. We filled up our bottles with fresh mountain water and started to form a plan for the coming hours.

From the top of the gondola we made our way to the lesser known trails. Unfortunately, we were still completely enveloped in clouds. The weather high up in the mountains can be so unpredictable. We were hoping to get a glimpse of the sunset.

We kept riding and finally got to a plateau with a 500-meter vertical drop next to us. It’s crazy how small you can feel out in the mountains! The surroundings were all very humbling. And then, as if someone had flipped a switch, the clouds moved away making room for the most beautiful mountain sunset we’d ever witnessed.

As it got dark, we made our way down and enjoyed the freeride character of the trail. The loose rocks allowed some sideways action and were followed by a massive descent all the way down into the valley. We had to stop several times to enjoy the last light as it got darker, but man, had we been lucky!
